Bruce Thomson's Sketches
This is a thumbnail sketch I did today, with the intention of doing a bigger drawing – but in the end I quite liked this and decided to leave it. The drawing is about 3 inches across, so the size you see it on the screen distorts the pencil strokes a little and makes it seem a bit messy. Still, I like the simple graphic sensibility of it.

Ahhhhh – one of the most beautiful of cars…This is an overlay of an overlay. I sketched this from an internet reference (lacking a D-Type of my own 😦 ) and traced the “successful” result onto vellum. I’m hoping to get time to do a proper digital painting of this…
The inspiration for yesterday’s sketch, this is a blower Bentley, or “Speed Six” – these won the 24 hours of Le mans in 1929 and 1930.
Not really sure what this is, except for me having a little fun. Loosely – VERY loosely based upon the Bentley Speed Six…
Juan manuel Fangio driving the legendary Maserati 250F. Astonishingly, different versions of this car competed in F1 from 1954 to 1960… 7 years – most cars today last (as distinct “designs, or iterations) for about 3 races… how times have changed.
Fangio won 2 championships with this car – but this comes with an huge asterisk – he won in 1957, winning 4 races from 7, finishing 2nd twice and retiring once – but in 1954 he won the first 2 races of the season in a 250F as a “freelancer” before joining Mercedes Benz at their inaugural race at the French GP.
I have to “abbreviate” my sketching style — I tend to take too much “care” (I guess this comes from using sketches as preparation for paintings) – anyway – these take too long – not a problem, perhaps, on the weekend…but other days?
Prepare yourself for economical pen strokes in the near future…
First pencil sketch in a while – and I’ve buggered it up quite comprehensively…
I think the drawing is reasonably good, but I worked on the wrong vellum and dragged the heel of my hand all over the drawing making a real mess, which needed to be cleaned up in both analog and digital formats.
This is Fangio in a 1955 Mercedes W196 – I think the next couple of posts (cartoon excepted) will be Fangio-centric…
…and hopefully neater, and cleaner!
Not exactly my usual subject matter (not old enough!) but this was requested by a student, so I obliged. Porsche’s are tough cars to draw, and this one was no different – I think the greenhouse is a little too “tall”, making it look less sporty than it should…
This is a sketch I did from a photo I took at last summer’s British Car day. I’ve always loved the Series I and II XJ sedans – in fact, I think that they are the perfect expression of what a sedan should be; powerful-looking, but understated, well balanced and “low” in their frame and stance, and sturdy, without verging into “hefty”. Beautifully balanced and proportioned cars. If I didn’t already own a 1970’s sedan I’d be actively looking for one of these…
